# Stage 7: How do you configure without creating permanent consultant dependency?

**Make every configuration decision explainable and maintainable by the future operating team.**

Start with the approved entity model, reference data, user roles and workflow decisions. Build the simplest supported configuration that passes release-one acceptance. Require a written justification for custom code or unsupported workarounds.

### What should the configuration register contain?

For each change, record:

- Business requirement and owner.
- Object, field, rule, workflow or report affected.
- Supported configuration versus custom development.
- Dependencies and access implications.
- Test evidence and approval.
- Deployment and rollback method.
- Maintainer and support boundary.
- Upgrade or regression-test obligation.

Use the proposed production access model in testing. Avoid proving the process only through an administrator account.

### How do you prepare administrators?

Require the administrator and deputy to complete realistic tasks without supplier intervention: reassign ownership, add an approved field, amend a reminder, diagnose a failed job, deploy a tested change and export the agreed data pack.

ServiceNow’s January 2026 implementation-specialist blueprint covers configuration, implementation and maintenance across risk, policy/compliance and audit applications. Its supplier-produced Risk Speed Learning material also provides configuration walkthroughs and linked YouTube playlists. Use such materials to build platform-specific skills, then test those skills against your design. **Exit gate:** the buyer’s administrators can explain the design and perform the agreed routine changes; documentation is usable rather than merely delivered.
